Barden attends launch event for Team Bath Racing's Formula Student entry

Employees from The Barden Corporation (UK) Ltd recently attended the official launch event for the Team Bath Racing TBR11 Formula Student car at the University of Bath. The event gave Barden and other team sponsors the opportunity to review the work involved with the Formula Student project, meet the students on the team and to watch a demonstration run of the finished car.

As sponsors of TBR11, Barden have supplied pairs of spindle bearings which are mounted against shoulders within the wheel hub housings. One of the key requirements for the TBR11 team was to improve the handling of the vehicle by increasing the moment stiffness of the wheel bearings. The increase in moment stiffness was achieved by mounting the bearings with a relatively large straddle (distance between bearing centres). The preload of each pair could also be adjusted to alter the moment stiffness of the bearings.

It was also important that the bearings were as lightweight as possible, in order to reduce the mass of the car overall. This was achieved with the use of thin section bearing pairs.

Schaeffler UK have also been involved with the project, supplying bearings for the inboard suspension assembly.

The TBR11 car

The aim of the Formula Student competition is to design and build a single seat, formula style race car and compete in static and dynamic events against other universities from across the globe. The competition now involves more than 400 international teams, with the team from Bath University being the top UK Formula Student team for the last three years.

The competition enables you engineering students to put the theory learned in lectures into practice, and to develop their skills working as part of a high performance team in a competitive environment.

The launch event was well attended and gave sponsors the opportunity to meet with members of the team in person ahead of the first competition, the Formula SAE in California, USA. The racing schedule will then be followed by the Formula Student events at Silverstone Circuit, UK, and Hockenheim Circuit, Germany, on the 14th July and 2nd August respectively.

Barden representatives were also given the opportunity to meet next years team, TBR12, who have already completed the concept and design for the 2012 car. Barden Engineering were on hand to offer advice to the student team on bearing selection for the new car.

Following the launch event, the TBR11 car has been shipped to the USA in preparation for it's first rave outing. Barden wishes the team the best of luck and much success in the competition!
